Engineering Mechanics Laboratory

Engineering mechanics is one of the most important and basic subjects of structural and mechanical engineering. It is necessary for students to have practical knowledge of the subject.
Engineering mechanics lab involves various practical’s related to verification of various principles, theorems and laws of mechanics such as principle of moments, polygon law of forces, Lami’s theorem, and parallelogram law of forces. It also deals with the study of simple lifting machines like simple screw jack, worm and worm wheel, differential axle and wheel, single purchase crab winch etc. It also deals with determination of coefficient of friction bet various surfaces, reactions developed at beam supports

Fluid Mechanics Laboratory-

The objective of this laboratory is to determine the various parameters related to fluid flow in pipes and in open channels. At present it is equipped with various stand-alone equipment to carry out experiments like determination of metacentric height of a floating vessel, verification of the Bernoulli’s energy equation, study of transition from laminar to turbulent flow, determination of coefficient of discharge for obstruction flow meter (venturimeter/orifice meter), determination of discharge coefficient for various notches, determination of hydraulic coefficients for flow through an orifice, determination of friction coefficient for pipes of various diameters and calculation of minor head losses in pipes, determination of viscosity of fluid.

Surveying Laboratory-

Surveying Store lab is used to gain knowledge of equipments which are used instruments linear and angular measurements. Basic surveys such as conducting chain and compass traversing, levelling, theodolite traversing, plane table survey and setting out curves and civil works are conducted by use of equipments. Projects such as block contouring, road project to prepare L-section and setting out building are undertaken by this lab. Observations are recorded in field book so as to prepare the maps with suitable scale.
Higher surveys with the help of total station, mirror stereoscope, study of topo sheets and Preparation of contour map by using suitable software such as Surfer are conducted in laboratory. Major equipments which are used in laboratory are theodolite, dumpy level, auto level, tilting level, subtense bar etc.

Material Testing Laboratory

Material Testing is a range of highly precise and reliable techniques that determine and measure the characteristics of materials, such as Physical & Mechanical properties, effect of composition on strength of materials/specimens. Materials testing helps us to understand and quantify whether a specific material or treatment is suitable for a particular application. Hence, the Material Testing Lab gives practical knowledge to student for improving their skill, research. This lab is also used for consultancy of materials testing.

Engineering Geology Laboratory

Engineering geology is the application of the geology to engineering study for the purpose of assuring that the geological factors regarding the location, design, construction, operation and maintenance of engineering works are recognized and accounted for. Engineering geologists provide geological and geotechnical recommendations, analysis, and design associated with human development and various types of structures. The realm of the engineering geologist is essentially in the area of earth-structure interactions, or investigation of how the earth or earth processes impact human made structures and human activities.

Works completed by engineering geologists include; geological hazard assessments, geotechnical, material properties, landslide and slope stability, erosion, flooding, dewatering, and seismic investigations, etc. The principal objective of the engineering geologist is the protection of life and property against damage caused by various geological conditions. The practice of engineering geology is also very closely related to the practice of geological engineering and geotechnical engineering.

About Laboratory:
Engineering Geology lab contains collection of the following:

  1. Rock forming minerals
  2. Accessories to study the physical properties of minerals.
  3. Models showing Structural Geology.
  4. Charts showing other geological details of India and Maharashtra.
  5. Rock samples of Igneous rocks.
  6. Rock samples of Secondary rocks.
  7. Rock samples of Metamorphic rocks.

Computer Laboratory-

A well-equipped computer lab with advanced facilities is established for the benefit of the civil engineering students. At computer lab, students get professional training on STAAD Pro, 2D & 3D drafting of civil engineering drawings using the latest version of AutoCAD software. Students will also gain the knowledge of design and drafting needed for civil engineering discipline using Bentley SELECT subscription. The knowledge gained in the lab eventually equips the students to provide quality service once employed in the industry.

Geotechnical Engineering Laboratory-

Geotechnical engineering is one of the important subjects in the Civil engineering field. Geotechnical engineering is the study of the behaviour of soils under the influence of loading forces and soil-water interactions. This knowledge is applied to the design of foundations, retaining walls, earth dams, clay liners, etc. As such, the geotechnical engineer is involved in field and laboratory investigations to determine the engineering properties of soils.

The Geotechnical Engineering Laboratory intends to train the students in the field of testing of soils to determine their physical, index and engineering properties. The student will gain hands-on experience in conducting soil laboratory tests to determine soil parameters needed for geotechnical engineering design, and to communicate this information with others.

These tests are done to find out the suitability of soil for the construction projects.

Transportation Engineering Laboratory-

Transportation lab is utilized by the Undergraduate students for Transportation Engineering Course. The lab is spacious and well equipped with all the major equipment’s to provide best laboratory facilities to cater the needs of the students. Facilities are available for Aggregate Testing, Bitumen Testing. The various Equipment available in the laboratory are Aggregate Impact Apparatus, Bitumen Penetration testing machine, Ring and Ball Apparatus , Fire and flash point Apparatus, Los Angles Abrasion testing machine and Ductility Testing Machine.

Environmental Engineering Laboratory

Environmental Engineering Laboratory is one of the most important laboratories of the Civil Engineering Department, where bachelor and graduate students perform experiments and lab work required by environmental engineering courses, and research work of their final projects. The laboratory provide societal services by conducting technical studies and laboratories analyses acquired by both private and public sectors in the fields of water, wastewater, air.

The laboratory composes modern and technically advanced instruments needed for water, wastewater and air quality. The laboratory has also many in-situ devices and equipment’s to perform different types of measurements and to take grab and composite water, wastewater, air samples.

Structural Dynamics & Earthquake Engineering Laboratory

The study of structural dynamics in civil engineering curriculum is commonly perceived to be a difficult exercise, more so in India, especially at the postgraduate and undergraduate level even at the graduate level (Included in Final Semester of the course as per D. BATU Syllabus), because of the mathematical nature of the subject. This difficulty is felt, not only by the students, but also by the teachers, who may not have had formal advanced level training in the subjects of earthquake engineering and structural dynamics. Thus, there exists a need to develop suitable teaching and learning aids to augment the classroom teaching of these subjects. One of the most effective ways to achieve this would be to develop a suite of simple experimental setups which would enable the study of basic issues related to vibration behaviour, such as, damping, dynamic response magnification, resonance, structural vibration under support motions, normal modes, vibration isolation, vibration absorption, dynamics with soft and/or weak first/intermediate stories, role of structural ductility in resisting dynamic loads, liquefaction of soils under dynamic loads, seismic wave amplification through soil layer, and rocking and up throw of rigid objects under dynamic base motions. These setups would provide valuable physical insights into the basic vibration behaviour of structures in general, and, structural dynamic responses under base motions, in particular. The work reported in this document contains the work done at the Department of Civil Engineering, Indian Institute of Science, as a part of a development project funded by the National Program on Earthquake Engineering Education, MHRD, and Government of India.
