MIT TARA – a Special Scholarship Scheme
MIT TARA, a special scholarship scheme, was launched by Gramaudyogik Shikshan Mandal, Aurangabad, to commemorate the great legendary first modern Indian feminist, Tarabai Shinde, who protested patriarchy and caste in the 19th century. Tarabai Shinde criticized the social inequality of caste and the patriarchal views of other activists who saw caste as the primary form of antagonism in society.
Her work is also significant because at a time when intellectuals and activists alike were primarily concerned with the hardships of a widow’s life and other easily identifiable atrocities perpetrated on women. Working in isolation, she was able to broaden the scope of analysis to include the ideological fabric of patriarchal society. She implies women everywhere are similarly oppressed.
Tarabai Shinde is known for her published work, “Stripurush Tulana” (“A Comparison between Women and Men”), initially published in Marathi in 1882, a critique of upper-caste patriarchy.

MIT Tribal Inclusive Girl’s Reinforcement Educational Scholarship Scheme (TIGRESS)
Maharashtra Institute of Technology (MIT), Aurangabad, is a premier institute in Marathwada region. This institute was established in 2001 and is one of the pioneers of private engineering education in the state. MIT offers UG, PG, and Ph.D. level programs in Engineering, Technology, and Architecture. As a responsible academic institute, MIT endeavours to support and promote technical education.
Education is the very foundation on which we all as individuals grow, achieve sustainable development and build our future. The ultimate purpose of education is to contribute in the growth of human society. Educational rights ensure education for everyone. At the same time, it is equally important to promote inclusive education policies to reduce the gender gap to empower women and girls everywhere, so they can reach their potential.
Tribal society was once known as unclothed or semi-clothed society living in the forest. However, now the tribals have also changed their ways and waited for the mainstream. The percentage of people excelling in educational sector has also increased from this community. A new identity has emerged as a tribal society that preserves its glorious traditions while moving from the present to a bright future and into the mainstream of society. All these tribes are having low economic and social status as compared to other social categories. These tribes are struggling in their social, economic and educational life in the state and they are facing exploitation at every sphere of life. Including many problems, lack of education is a reason for their exploitation. Also, it is well-known that the enrolment of girl students in higher education from Maharashtra tribal regions (specifically from Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, Nandurbar and Yavatmal Districts) is very low like most of the other states.
There are many girls in India who focus on making career in technology field. MIT understands its responsibility towards society and has decided to offer financial assistance and scholarships to girl students desirous of pursuing Engineering and Technology education. MIT Aurangabad has already started the scholarship for girl students, most commonly called as ‘MIT-TARA’ Scheme. This scheme mostly focuses on the newly admitted girl students those who are meritorious but face the financial crises and is open to all social categories.
In line with the same motive in mind, MIT was thinking to provide financial assistant to the tribal community girl students from Maharashtra. This will reinforce to continue education and reduce the declining trend on their enrolment in higher technical education. Institute has started new scholarship for such tribal girls on the occasion of “World Tribal Day 2022 (09/08/2022)”. This scholarship is introduced from Academic Year 2022-23 and is named as ‘Tribal Inclusive Girl’s Reinforcement Educational Scholarship Scheme (TIGRESS)’ TIGRESS Scholarship will prove to be very helpful in the technological upliftment of tribal community girl students from Maharashtra.
This scholarship scheme includes a substantial number of scholarships for girls admitting at First Year of 4 years B. Tech Program from AY 2022-23. Through the TIGRESS
Scholarship, we are striving towards creating gender equality in Engineering and technology domains by encouraging girls to showcase their excellence and become future leaders and role models in the field.
