Solutions by nature demand interdisciplinary work. Based on the problem definition a team of students and faculty members is constituted to address it. This team works closely with the industry. Few examples of team MIT’s achievements are given below:
A ) Problem: Improvement required in the life of AISI D2 Die and Punch to improve Return on Investment
Solution: A Cryogenic processing cycle was designed for the die and punch material. With controlled heat treatment and cryogenic processing, the die and punch were evaluated through pin on disc wear test. The results were tested on field by actually measuring the life of the system.
Result: It was found that the conventional die and punch assembly gave 40,000 pieces life before sharpening, whereas the cryogenically processed system gave 400,000 pieces at one go!!
Outcome: The processing cycles are now adopted by this industry.
B ) Problem: Conventional method of thread checking is manual, cumbersome and no visual or data analytics exist. Client needed a low cost system to reliably test component and record results.
Solution MIT students and faculty invented a digital, real time, IOT enabled internal thread checking system.
Result: Client achieved Automation for 100% internal thread inspection with reduce manual fatigue, Data analytics via web and mobile app with low capital and operating cost set up.
Outcome: Client achieved a throughput of 5500 jobs per day with 12hrs Shift.
New Learning Initiatives through Community Development
The need is to provide opportunities for application of knowledge to solve problems faced by local communities both rural and urban provides immense learning opportunity. MIT has a structured program to address these needs modelled on the lines of Unnat Bharat Abhiyan, Unnat Maharashtra Abhiyan and Cluster Development Cells.
Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA) and Unnat Maharashtra Abhiyan (UMA) - These programs are designed to tackle grand challenges through participation of institutions of higher learning. The objective of UBA & UMA is to make research going on in engineering colleges, polytechnics, and other higher education institutions public-oriented by analyzing various day -to-day social and developmental problems in the country and the state(e.g. Rural sanitation, toilets, drainage management, drinking water, road development, evaluation and reinforcements of roads, water conservation, fuel and energy, health, drought, etc.)
The solutions thus development create opportunities for local industry to address local problems and students and faculty to contribute to the development of goals.
2. Cluster Development Cells (CDC) - These programmes are designed to create common facilities centers that cater to a cluster of type of industries in a given geography. The industry benefits from the knowledge transfer from institutes of higher learning contributing to setting future direction for growth of a specific cluster. The students who work on such initiatives gain significant knowledge and practical training improving their employability.
