Technomillennium is a yearly feature of MIT scheduled every year since 2000 from 15th – 17th September in remembrance of Engineer's day on 15th September and Marathwada Mukti Sangram Din on 17th September. The theme for the event this year is "Smart Materials" and will consist of series of lecture talks by experts and academicians from all over the nation.
Smart materials or designed materials are the materials that have one or more properties that can be significantly changed in a controlled fashion by external stimuli, such as stress, temperature, moisture, pH, electric or magnetic fields. For example, the 'photochromic' materials used in reactive spectacle lenses become darker in response to increased light.
Some examples are:Piezoelectric material, shape memory alloys, temperature responsive polymers, chromogenic systems, self healing materials, thermoelectric materials etc. Usage of smart materials reduces weights of devices, their failure chances. They also have the potential to reduce waste and to simplify recycling.
To get updated about the new developments and technologies in this field MIT Aurangabad organised a three day lecture series under the banner of Technomillennium 2012. In the inaugural session chief guest invited was Dr.B.S.Munjal, Scientist, Indian Space Research Organisation, (ISRO), Ahmedabad. He spoke on "Piezoelectric materials". Key note speaker invited on first day was Dr.P.K.Panda, National Aerospace Laboratories, Bengaluru and he spoke on "Development of PZT/PIZO Smart materials and devices for aerospace applications".After lunch the session speaker was Dr.S.T.Mhaske, Institute of Chemical Technology(ICT), Mumbai . He delivered his lecture on "Conductive Nanocomposites". The last session speaker was Dr.N.B.Dhokey, College of Engineering,(COE), Pune and his lecture topic was "Recent Trends in SMC for Electrical Applications" .
The second day of Technomillennium was scheduled for the inauguration of the students chapter of Plastics and Polymer Engineering Department (PPED) alongwith Indian Plastics Institute , (IPI) Mumbai. Dr.Prakash Trivedi, Chairman, IPI, briefed about IPI and its student chapter.Mr.Hemant Minocha, Chairman, IPI, Mumbai Chapter delivered a lecture on "Smart Materials".124 students of PPE department,MIT Aurangabad became member of IPI. The vote of thanks for this session was given by Dr.S.T.Mhaske, Chairman, Education Committee IPI, Mumbai Chapter. After this session Dr.Anoop Anand, Scientist, Defence Research and Development Organistion,(DRDO) , Pune delivered a lecture on "Advance Composites and Nanomaterials for Defence Application".
The third day speaker was Dr. A.V. Tejankar, Vice Principal, Deogiri College, Aurangabadand he spoke on Geohydrological Characterization with RS & GIS in Hardrock of Maharashtra.
